Lessons progress from preschool to level 6. Sessions are two weeks long and include eight 45 minute lessons (including a safety day appropriate to the level) running Monday through Thursday. All instructors are Red Cross certified.
Preschool: This level is designed for children 3 or 4 years old who are having their first swimming lesson experience. Children will begin with water adjustment, putting face in the water, blowing bubbles, and picking up items in water, and progress at the child’s pace.
Level 1: This level is for children ages 4 or 5 who have completed the preschool class or who are ready for level 2, but not tall enough. The class combine water exploration with primary swimming skills where the swimmer can touch, but also be supported by an instructor. This ends with being able to swim unsupported for approximately 10 feet and float by themselves.
Level 2: Children learn the fundamental skill of swimming such as floating without support. They also add the arm and leg actions of swimming and work slowly to combine it all together as well as be introduced to rotary breathing. They will also learn basic personal safety skills. Your child must be able to stand with his or her head above water in 3 to 3 ½ feet of water.
Level 3: Children will work to coordinate the arm and leg action of both the front and back crawl as well as rotary breathing. They will be introduced to the elementary backstroke and basic diving skills. They also learn additional safety skills.
Level 4: In this class, students develop confidence in the strokes they have learned and improve on other aquatic skills. They are introduced to breaststroke, sidestroke, and open turns. It is an endurance class and the students should begin to perfect their skills.
Level 5: The emphasis of this class is stroke coordination and refinement. Students will continue to strengthen their endurance. They are introduced to butterfly, racing starts and turns and surface dives.
Level 6: This class is varied depending on the skills of the students. The main focus is to refine and polish the student’s strokes so that they can swim with ease over a great distance. The class focuses on good fitness habits. It also includes a pre-lifeguard training.
Mommy and Me: This class is meant for Mommies and/or Daddies to work with their little ones ages 6 months to 3 yrs. We learn some basic techniques of water exploration, water safety, and basic swimming skills. This class is only offered a couple of times a summer, usually in July.
